STONED STREAMS: THE BEST SHOWS & MOVIES STREAMING SEPTEMBER 2023

Summers over, so fall onto your couch, light one up, and watch one or all of this month’s Stoner Streams!

WHO IS ERIN CARTER? (NETFLIX)

Released on August 24, exclusively on Netflix, Who is Erin Carter? is a limited spy-thriller series akin to Mission: Impossible or 007. A wild ride from start to finish, the Netflix series follows an unassuming mother with a shaky past whose past comes back to haunt her after surviving a grocery-store robbery. To most, Erin Carter is just a dedicated wife and schoolteacher. To others, Erin Carter is a badass, butt-kicking babe and master of espionage. It’s broken up nicely into episodes, so you can binge the hell out of the show or just watch an hour here or there without feeling disconnected from the plot. Definitely smoke some sativa while watching this show.

THE FLASH (AUGUST 25) (CRAVE)

Ezra Miller controversies and “superhero fatigue” aside, The Flash is genuinely a fun and nostalgia-filled adventure that feels like a comic book come to life. Was it a brilliant masterpiece that rivals the likes of Iron Man or Avengers: Endgame? No. Is it a humorous and digestible film that isn’t preachy and is legitimately re-watchable. Hell yes. Although this movie absolutely bombed at the box office, it isn’t that bad of a movie. The Flash didn’t need Ezra Miller’s mediocre acting in its titular role, which is the biggest reason people were turned off by the film, and I’ll never blame someone for voting with their dollar. That being said, if you’re already paying for Crave this month, you should definitely load a bowl and switch on this live-action movie that’s like 75% CGI and cartoon.

FANTASTIC BEASTS: THE SECRET OF DUMBLEDORE (AUGUST 30) (NETFLIX)

Who doesn’t like Harry Potter? The latest installment in J. K. Rowling’s wizard-based movie universe, Fantastic Beasts: The Secret of Dumbledore was finally released on Netflix on August 30th, and of course serves as another prequel to the original film franchise. Following Professor Albus Dumbledore, a dark wizard called Gellert Grindelwald attempts to seize control of the wizarding world. Dumbledore links up with “magizoologist” Newt Scamander and the two lead a team of wizards and witches as they encounter old and new beasts alike. If you’re a fan of this kind of stuff, then you know as well as I do that nothing beats hitting a bong or eating an edible and tripping balls while watching crazy magic and monsters and what not.

ONE PIECE (AUGUST 31) (NETFLIX)

For anime fans, the live-action One Piece series has finally started dropping episodes on Netflix, beginning on August 31. The series follows the adventures of the Straw Hat Pirates and their captain, Monkey D. Luffy, as they explore the dangerous oceans, lands and beyond in search of the “One Piece”. Locating the fabled treasure will lament Captain Monkey as the “King of the Pirates'', and I’ll spare you the rest of the details because there’s a lot to unpack. There’s a reason One Piece is truly one of the best animes ever made, and thus far, the live-action version is also living up to the hype. Tons of laughs and nods to the anime are laced throughout, and the cartoony CGI effects are visually pleasing. It’s the perfect type of show to light up and watch in your downtime.

THE POPE’S EXORCIST (SEPTEMBER 1) (CRAVE)

Starring the legendary Russell Crowe, The Pope’s Exorcist is this year’s annual “scary possessed girl” movie, and is already available on Crave as of September 1, just in time for spooky season. The film takes place in 1987 and follows Father Gabriele Amorth, chief exorcist for the Vatican, as he battles innocent-possessing demons and Satan himself. The Pope’s Exorcist is “based on a true story”, but of course adds mostly elements of fiction, and is a detailed portrait of a priest who performed more than 100,000 exorcisms in his lifetime. There are plenty of weed strains that help with anxiety, so check out ShopKindling.ca and grab something that’ll take the edge off while enjoying the plethora of horror movies surely pouring out over the next two months. Who doesn’t like a good scare from time to time?
