New Study Finds Those with Anxiety Report Better Sleep When Using Cannabis Vs Alcohol or Nothing

A recent federally funded study delved into the relationship between anxiety, substance use, and sleep quality, unveiling intriguing insights into how marijuana and alcohol impact rest among individuals managing anxiety. Published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Review, the study involved 347 participants using cannabis for anxiety treatment.

The research focused on daily surveys over 30 days, assessing subjective sleep quality concerning marijuana use, alcohol use, or abstaining from both substances. Surprisingly, the findings shed light on the sleep effects of different substances on individuals grappling with anxiety.

Participants reported improved sleep quality after using cannabis alone or in combination, but not after alcohol consumption alone. Frequency of substance use also played a role, with more frequent users experiencing better sleep quality on cannabis-only days compared to those using marijuana and alcohol less frequently.

Contrary to alcohol, which might aid in falling asleep but not necessarily enhance overall sleep quality, cannabis emerged as a potential sleep enhancer, especially for those dealing with anxiety.

Moreover, the study highlighted that frequent cannabis users didn't experience weakened sleep effects over time, suggesting that tolerance levels didn't influence sleep quality. Instead, frequent users reported notably better sleep after cannabis use compared to non-use days.

However, the study also pointed to gaps in understanding how different cannabis concentrations and cannabinoid profiles affect sleep outcomes, prompting the need for future clinical trials to explore these nuances.

Ultimately, this research suggests potential positive effects of cannabis on subjective sleep quality for individuals managing anxiety, emphasizing the necessity for further exploration into the interplay between substance use, frequency, and sleep among this population seeking relief from anxiety-related sleep problems.
