CBD FAQs

What is CBD?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a naturally occurring compound found in the cannabis plant. It belongs to a class of compounds known as cannabinoids. Unlike THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD is typically non-intoxicating, meaning it does not cause a "high" feeling commonly associated with cannabis

CBD is believed to interact with the body's endocannabinoid system, which regulates various physiological processes such as mood, sleep, appetite, and immune response. Research suggests that CBD may have anti-inflammatory, analgesic, neuroprotective, and antioxidant properties.

How does CBD work?

CBD interacts with the body's endocannabinoid system (ECS) which is believed to play a critical role in safeguarding the nervous system, activating the immune response, and regulating stress recovery and overall health.

The ECS consists of two primary components:

  1. Endocannabinoids: Naturally produced cannabinoids within the body.
  2. Cannabinoid receptors: Found throughout the central nervous system, brain, and various other body areas, including the immune system.

Endocannabinoids fit into cannabinoid receptors like keys into locks, facilitating communication between cells. Research indicates that CBD inhibits an enzyme responsible for breaking down excess endocannabinoids, thereby increasing their circulation in the body. This elevation in endocannabinoid levels can induce effects in both the body and mind.

What are the effects of CBD?

You may see claims that CBD can sooth and nourish skin, promote sleep, calm, and pain relief, but comprehensive research is still needed to understand CBD's therapeutic potential across different conditions.

In Canada, clinical trials are investigating CBD's effectiveness for conditions like anxiety disorders, substance dependence withdrawal, post-surgical pain, epilepsy, cancer-related symptoms, chronic headaches, and pain.

And, emerging studies indicate CBD may affect the body's natural chemicals such as serotonin (mood and stress), adenosine (sleep-wake cycle), and vanilloid (pain perception).

The effects of CBD varies by individual factors including genetics, personality, age, sex, dosage, and method of consumption.

Are there any risks associated with CBD?

While CBD is generally considered safe, it can interact with certain medications, so it's advisable to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any CBD regimen, especially if you have underlying health conditions or are taking other medications.
