Baby Boomers Trying Weed Again

Who says the Golden Years Can't be Green?

With cannabis legalization sweeping across Canada, a growing number of seniors are discovering the potential benefits of this plant-based wonder. From easing aches and pains to promoting better sleep, it seems like Grandma and Grandpa might just be the coolest kids on the block. Let's explore the world of cannabis and seniors, where relaxation meets rejuvenation.

Seniors Canna-Curious about Therapeutic Benefits

A recent study published in the American Geriatrics Society investigated cannabis use among older adults and the result were (not) surprising! Destigmatization has made seniors more comfortable with cannabis, stating 61% of people surveyed started trying weed after 60.

The vast majority (78%) of participants reported using cannabis solely for medical reasons. The most common conditions they aimed to treat were pain/arthritis (73%), sleep problems (29%), anxiety (24%), and depression (17%). Notably, over 76% of the participants found cannabis to be helpful in managing their medical conditions, with few reporting adverse effects.

Can I Smoke with My Grandparents?

Around 15% of the study participants reported using cannabis within the past 3 years and, of those, 53% reported regular use, meaning daily or weekly. However, the study suggests we won't be smoking joints with grandma and grandpa any time soon—nearly 46% of paticipants preferred cannabidiol-only products, which contain little to no THC, the psychoactive compound in cannabis.

The study showed slightly more than half (51%) of the participants reported using dispensaries to obtain cannabis. Lotions (35%), oils (35%), and smoking (30%) were the most prevalent administration methods. There are plenty of approachable ways to consume THC or CBD without having to bust up a nug of weed and smoke it through a bong or joint.

If you're fav seniors are in the smoking category, it's time to sesh with grandma! You could be the one to help introduce or refamiliarize her with something that can help spark some joy in both your lives. Enjoy munchies, and maybe take a walk down memory lane sharing some stories. You might learn a wild thing or two about grandma that you did not know.

Where Seniors Get Their Weed

It's important to note that this study is from the US, where dispensaries distribute medical cannabis (unlike Canada's mail-order system). If your grandparents are canna-curious for medical reasons, encourage them to speak with a healthcare professional, especially since cannabis can interact with some pharmaceutical medications.
