CANNABIS FLOWER FAQ

How is legal cannabis packaged?

Cannabis flower is sold in various quantities, typically ranging from 1 gram to 28 grams (1 ounce). It must be sold in child-resistant packaging, with clear labeling that includes information such as the strain name, THC and CBD content, health warnings, and a unique excise stamp indicating it is a legal product.

What kinds of cannabis flower can I buy?

There are an abundance of flower cannabis cultivars to discover.

Beyond indica, sativa, and hybrid strains, appreciate a wide range of phenotypes (a.k.a genetics) that are prized for their potency, flavour, or bag appeal. Different types of cannabis will offer distinct terpene and flavour profiles.

Why should I buy legal weed?

All legal cannabis products are subject to strict quality control standards set by Health Canada. This includes testing for contaminants like pesticides, mold, and heavy metals.

Does cannabis flower go bad?

Under ideal storage conditions (cool, dark, and airtight), cannabis flower can remain fresh and potent for 6 months to a year. However, its quality will gradually decline over time.

How can I tell if my cannabis has gone bad?

Signs of Bad Cannabis Flower

  1. Mold and Mildew: Visible mold or mildew, often appearing as white, grey, or black spots, indicates spoiled cannabis. Moldy cannabis should not be consumed.
  2. Brittle and Dry: If the flower becomes too dry and brittle, it can lose potency and flavor. Proper moisture levels are crucial to maintaining its quality.
  3. Discoloration: Fresh cannabis should have vibrant green hues, along with colors specific to the strain. Yellowing or browning can indicate degradation.
  4. Off Smell: Cannabis should have a distinct aroma, often described as earthy, piney, citrusy, or skunky. A musty, stale, or ammonia-like smell suggests it has gone bad.
  5. Loss of Potency: Over time, THC can degrade into CBN (cannabinol), which has less psychoactive effect. This results in reduced potency and efficacy.

How much cannabis can I purchase in Ontario?

Individuals can purchase up to 30 grams of dried cannabis (or equivalent) in a single transaction. Equivalents are calculated for other cannabis products, such as edibles and concentrates.

How can I keep my cannabis flower fresh?

o keep cannabis flower fresh, it’s important to store it properly. Here are some tips to help maintain its potency, flavor, and aroma:

  1. Use Airtight Containers: Store cannabis in airtight containers, such as glass jars with tight-sealing lids. Mason jars work well. Avoid plastic bags and containers, as they can let in air and degrade the flower.
  2. Keep Away from Light: Light, especially UV light, can degrade cannabinoids and terpenes in cannabis. Store your containers in a dark place, like a cupboard or drawer.
  3. Control Humidity: Ideal humidity for storing cannabis is between 55-62%. Too much moisture can lead to mold, while too little can dry out the flower. Use humidity packs (such as Boveda packs) inside your storage container to maintain the right level of moisture.
  4. Store in a Cool Place: High temperatures can dry out cannabis and degrade its potency. Aim to keep your cannabis in a cool place, ideally between 60-70°F (15-21°C). Avoid storing it in the refrigerator, as fluctuations in temperature and humidity can cause mold.
  5. Limit Air Exposure: Air can dry out cannabis and degrade its quality. Only open your storage container when necessary, and reseal it tightly afterward.
  6. Avoid Excess Handling: Frequent handling can cause trichomes (the resin glands containing cannabinoids and terpenes) to break off. Handle your cannabis gently and as little as possible.
  7. Keep Separate from Strong Odors: Cannabis can absorb strong odors from its environment. Store it away from substances with strong smells to prevent it from taking on unwanted aromas.
