Can’t sleep? I’m with you. I’ve been suffering from insomnia for years. I remember coming home from a night out after a late-night session with friends and sleeping like a baby. I never put two and two together until in recent years, when I was prescribed weed for my mental health. Cannabis does help with sleep. A while back, we shared how to use cannabis for sleep. I’m here as an avid believer that cannabis can get rid of your forever fidgetiness, to share a deeper understanding of why weed weeds out insomnia.
Here’s how weed works with sleep
Cannabinoids interact with cannabinoid receptors in the brain, which is why they are thought to have sleep-inducing properties. Adenosine, which promotes sleep, is increased in the body and the arousal system of the brain is suppressed when cannabinoids bind to these receptors. We may feel drowsy or hypnotized thanks to these combined effects.
Remember cannabis affects each person differently. Just because it works for me, doesn’t mean it’ll work for you. Here’s why. THC can have a stimulating effect on some people even though it usually has a sedative effect, especially if they are first using cannabis or are taking higher doses of it. If this is the case, using cannabis before bed may make it harder to fall asleep. CBD seems to encourage alertness at lower doses and sleepiness at higher doses. Impacts of the timing and dose of the two compounds together may be important factors.
Depending on the type of cannabis you use when using it as a sleep aid, you might experience different effects. THC, the main psychoactive substance in cannabis, is present in higher concentrations. CBD concentrations in hemp plants are higher.
Indica and sleep
If you scroll down a tad, you’ll notice a list of our favourite strains to use for sleep. You’ll also notice that indica is present in a few of them. One of the most prevalent terpenes in indica plants, myrcene has sedative and motor relaxant properties. In a 2002 study, scientists discovered that mice given 200 mg/kg of myrcene slept 2.6 times longer on average than control mice. According to some evidence, myrcene may also increase the potency of THC by facilitating its easier passage through the blood-brain barrier.
It has also been demonstrated that the terpene linalool, which has a lavender-like floral scent, has calming and anti-anxiety properties. Terpinolene, a terpene with a piney, herbal scent, is the third most prevalent terpene in indica strains that induce sedation.
